Question 1

My Haydon Wick house is only recently built and everything looks fine. Why would it need a survey?

Accepted Answer

Because looking fine and working properly are not always the same thing, and modern homes can still have a loose fitting or a radiator that never heats evenly. The survey checks the practical side, so you are not relying on first impressions.

Question 2

Does the survey include the pressure gauge and visible parts of my combi boiler setup?

Accepted Answer

I take a general look at the visible plumbing and heating components, which includes the pipework and fittings you can see around the boiler. What I do not do is test or assess the gas side of the appliance, so treat the boiler itself as a separate matter.

Question 3

I assumed a survey in Haydon Wick would also sort out gas safety on my combi. Is that right?

Accepted Answer

That is a common assumption, but no: the Peace of Mind Survey is a plumbing and heating check, and it does not replace a gas inspection, certificate or safety check on gas appliances. Anything to do with the appliance itself belongs with a gas engineer.

Question 4

How do you test the shower and the bath taps?

Accepted Answer

I run them and watch how they behave, looking for leaks around the fittings, odd flow and any sign of water where it should not be. If something does not behave as I would expect, I note it down.

Question 5

A couple of my radiators are cool at the top. Will you bleed them while you are here?

Accepted Answer

Where it is appropriate, yes, bleeding is part of the radiator check. If they stay cold afterwards, the report will point to that as something needing further attention.

Question 6

How is the report laid out, and does it separate good news from bad?

Accepted Answer

It has three clear parts: issues I found, items that appear to be working correctly, and recommended remedial work. You can see at a glance which areas appear to be working correctly and which need a follow-up.

Question 7

Much of the pipework in my house is boxed in behind fitted units. What can you actually see?

Accepted Answer

I can see the parts that are exposed, such as under the sink, around radiators and at visible joints. Boxed-in runs stay hidden unless you have an access panel, and I will tell you which areas I could not view.

Question 8

My partner and I both work shifts. Does the whole household need to be at the house?

Accepted Answer

No, one of you is enough, as long as you are there when I go through the findings so you can ask questions. The other can read the report afterwards.

Question 9

Would it be better to wait until I have lived here through a winter before booking?

Accepted Answer

You can, but I would not wait if there is a doubt now. Checking early means any snag is found before the heating is under real daily demand, rather than during a cold snap.

Question 10

Do you only work in the older villages, or will you come out to a SN25 estate like mine?

Accepted Answer

SN25 is part of the area I cover, roughly 5 miles from my base in Highworth. A newer estate house is just as suitable for a Peace of Mind Survey as an older one.
